The types of rust inhibitors in metalworking fluids mainly include water-soluble rust inhibitors, oil-soluble rust inhibitors, emulsified rust inhibitors, gas-phase rust inhibitors and wax-film rust inhibitors.
Water-soluble rust inhibitor is an aqueous solution formed by adding other rust inhibitors to water as the main solvent. According to the mechanism of rust prevention, it can be specifically divided into three categories: first, metal and rust inhibitor generate insoluble and dense oxide films to prevent the anodic dissolution of metal or promote the passivation of metal and inhibit the corrosion of metal. Such rust inhibitors are also called passivators, such as sodium nitrite, potassium dichromate, etc. Second, metals and rust inhibitors generate insoluble salts, in order to isolate the metal from the corrosive medium and avoid corrosion; third, the metal and the rust inhibitor form a insoluble complex, which covers the metal surface and protects the metal from corrosion.
Oil-soluble rust inhibitors and emulsified rust inhibitors are mainly used in oil-based or oil-water mixed substrates. They form a protective film on the metal surface to isolate the metal from the air and moisture in the environment. To slow down the rate of metal oxidation and corrosion.
Gas phase rust inhibitor and wax film type rust inhibitor is to form a layer of gas phase protective film or wax film on the metal surface to achieve the purpose of rust prevention, this kind of rust inhibitor can be isolated to a certain extent from the contact between the metal and the external environment, so as to protect the metal from corrosion.
In addition, rust inhibitors in metalworking fluids also include inorganic and organic types. Inorganic rust inhibitors mainly include sodium nitrite, molybdate, borate, etc., of which nitrite and molybdate are oxidizing rust inhibitors, but the formation of the anti-rust film layer is not very dense, need some film-forming agent assistance. Organic rust inhibitors mainly include alcohol amines, carboxylates (mainly monobasic, dibasic and tribasic acids), boric acid esters, amides, etc. These rust-proof materials are used in different industries. Among them, the carboxylic acid is a widely used class of anti-rust additives, before use with different types of alcohol amine and carboxylic acid amine use, but the cost of this type of anti-rust agent is higher.
